August! We started school this month & that meant a lot of planning, organizing, shopping, prepping, etc. BUT I also got some reading done because I'm just that person.
Also, I'm so thankful my husband was able to rescue my website. His server was a victim of a "catastrophic failure" (in the words of our host). Tyler was able to restore my blog (with no help from the host). Yay!
This book was given to me by Lifeway in exchange for an honest review. When I got the list of options for review copies, I immediately requested this one. As a volunteer in children's ministries since I was a kid myself, I have noticed the increase in diagnoses that require accommodations. Many changes are common sense (or required by law) & have been in place for generations (ASL interpretation, ministries, ramps). Some accommodations are not so obvious nor so easy, especially for those "invisible" needs. Anyways, this book does a wonderful job of centering the discussion in the Gospel & how Jesus treated people while He walked the earth. He always treated people in need with dignity & respect.
This is one of those books that I wish I’d read back when my kids were babies. From the time they are born, time in nature is instrumental in each child’s development. This book is full of encouragement to parents to get their kids outside in unstructured play in natural settings. Yes, playgrounds & soccer games are outside & also good for development. But the really important thing is just letting them play in natural surroundings without rules, without toys. So many life lessons happen in just this way. If that idea intrigues you, this is the book for you!
This book has been on my list for way too long. Phylicia is a voice of reason in what can sometimes be a confusing online space for Christian women. She brings Biblical literacy to women in accessible ways. Her book is more of just that--some really deep theological instruction followed by practical application to your daily life. If you are a new Christian or just a Christian who wants to grow in this area, please pick up this book. It is so helpful!
This one was the perfect book to read as I prepared to begin another year of homeschooling. In this book, Macauley takes the Charlotte Mason methods & summarizes them while adding her own insights. If you’re not in the homeschool world, you probably have no idea who Charlotte Mason is, but just know that her educational philosophy is something that every family can incorporate. (She was not a homeschooler nor was she a mother. She was a school teacher!)
This book is super helpful for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of God’s Word. Kristie Anyabwile has been leading Bible studies for years & she lends those years of study to her readers. As you gain the knowledge of the genres found in the Bible, you can more easily decipher the context & meaning of the text.
I want to recommend this book to every member of a local church. Tony Merida wants us to LOVE our churches & see them as the God-given gifts that they are! Churches are full of imperfect people. The chance to get hurt when you are closely connected with other imperfect people is high. It is so easy to slip into a critical mindset or even just view church from a consumer point-of-view. But active engagement in a local church body is vital to the life of a Christian. If you are struggling to see the value of regularly attending & serving your local church, I hope you will give this book a chance to change your mind.
September starts some busy months for our family, so I am thankful for the rest we got this summer. Ready to get back into the swing of activities & serving at church & seeing friends & all the fall activities.
