May 2026 Book Reviews

A lot of my free time this month has not been spent reading but planning our next school year. And making plans for the summer. So, just a few books finished this month.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

Jumped on a bandwagon & read the book everyone is talking about because of the movie. This is totally different from my usual books, but I figured it couldn't be too bad. My eyes might have glazed over during all the science explanations, however the storyline kept me going. The main plot is that the sun is dying & they recruit a middle school science teacher to save the earth from extinction. The story is told through frequent flashbacks. I won't say much more in hopes that I won't spoil anything for you that hasn't already been spoiled by the movie trailers.

Ordinary Time: Lessons Learned While Staying Put by Annie B. Jones

A bookshop owner in a small southern town sits down to write essays about her life. Sounds simple enough & it is. Parts of her stories connected with me while others didn't. I've seen some reviews criticizing the smallness or simplicity of the essays. But maybe that's the point! She's writing about the ordinary time--a name given to the longest season of the liturgical church calendar. The times where the calling on our lives is simply "to live a quiet life" as Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians. It's not an overtly preachy book nor is it anything groundbreaking. It's ordinary & I'd venture to say that finding meaning in those ordinary days is extraordinary.

Who is God?: 52 Pictures to Share with Your Family by Kate Hox

Having read Kate Hox's book Who is Jesus, I preordered this one to read with my kids almost instantly. This book deals with much more challenging material, so it works as a great follow up to the earlier book. You get to meditate with your family on what it means for God to redeem & restore us & many other parts of His character. Each devotional is just about 2 pages & is followed up with discussion questions & passages to look up in the Bible for further study. This is a high-quality resource for you to share with your family, including kids of all ages.

You Are a Theologian: An Invitation to Know and Love God Well by Jen Wilkin & J.T. English

While I bought this book a bit ago, it's been languishing on my to-be-read shelf. A group of ladies decided to read the book together this past month & meet together to discuss it. I would say that this is a book that all believers would benefit from reading at some point. The authors remind us why we are all theologians & why theology matters. The skillfully summarize the foundational dogmas of our faith & make concrete applications as to how those beliefs look as we live them out in our daily lives. After reading, I hope you're like me--eager to dive into some of these topics in more depth.

Just 4 books! We'll see how June plays out, but I have a few that are already in progress...

Cheering you on!
